Studio visit with Elysa D. Batista

Studio visit with Elysa D. Batista

We may be using a 10-year-old printer but that doesn’t mean we don’t use Facetime or Skype. Last week, we had our first long-distance studio visit with Elysa D. Batista (who lives and works in Miami) and printed her work for our Nov. 7 show. The prints are not released yet but we heard the rumors that there is a sneak peek leaked on Instagram. The truth is…

Elysa D. Batista makes three-dimensional work that explores sign and text as sculptural communicators of coded information. The evolution of language as a form of interpreting the world is a constant investigation in her work. Batista carves and cuts manipulated digital typography onto materials ranging from wood, cardboard, foam core, cork or mechanically assisted onto materials such as plexiglass. It is executed in dialogue with advertorial signage that can be encountered in a storefront window or outdoor space. From anagrams to poetic sayings, Batista’s words allow the viewer to decode his/her own meaning through the multiplicity of language.
