Parsons Printmaking – Workshop at Parsons Pop Up

Risograph Workshop by Cem Kocyildirim at Parsons Printmaking, Sheila C. Johnson Design Center Every year, students from Andrew Robinson’s class at Parsons organize a Pop Up Print Shop & Show. This year on November 6, they invited me to show my work and do a demo / workshop with their Risograph printer which is located on the tenth floor lab at Parsons, 66th 5th Avenue building. It’s funny because Parsons Printmaking studio is on the 4th floor, and I had no idea we had a risograph when I was a student of Martin Mazorra’s Parsons printmaking graduate class.

The adventure started with a small promenade with the risograph; from 10th floor lab (which is mostly used by BFA Design & Technology program – BFA DT) to the lobby area of the building, right next to the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center / Gallery. After setting up the machine, I ran a small test with some fliers for Drums on Paper show. I prepared a letter size work with half of the page as a flier and the other half as one of my crumbled prints, with scissors marks in the middle to separate the two work.

Parsons has an MZ model Risograph which can print two colors at the same time. The visitors of the Pop Up Shop were really into the risograph process. For most, it was very surprising to see art work printed with a machine which looks like a regular office copier. The fluorescent pink and the teal were the go to colors for most of them. We have printed some posters, fliers, and we even finished a small edition of a zine about an Autistic and Bisexual robot.

Here is the announcement for the Pop-Up on Parsons blog: Parsons Hosts Pop Up Print Shop and Show

The next day, at Drums on Paper, Risograph Print Show, it was amazing to see some familiar faces from the workshop. I guess that means that people were really into this process.
